A three-member team of the WCCI is in the city to inspect craft clusters, processes involved, and the status of artisans. A new tribal identity

President of India Droupadi Murmu emphasized that the current initiatives should not mark the end but rather the beginning of a significant journey. Her statement was made during an event where a book titled “Contributions of Tribal Leaders in the Freedom Struggle” was presented to her by the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST). The book aimed to compile knowledge about tribal histories and cultures based on oral traditions within these communities, as opposed to existing literature influenced by colonial governments.

The BJP has strategically incorporated the project’s progress and the contents of the book into its campaign strategy to appeal to the Scheduled Tribe population in India, especially as the country approaches the 2024 Lok Sabha election. The party is highlighting the histories of Adivasi resistance across India to strengthen its narrative around Adivasi identity and their role in Indian civilization and culture.

The BJP’s efforts to reach out to tribal voters were evident when they declared November 15 as ‘Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas’ and nominated Droupadi Murmu, a Santhal woman and former Jharkhand Governor, for the presidency. The party’s manifesto for the 2024 election includes plans to expand on the concept of ‘Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas’ and designate 2025 as ‘Janjatiya Gaurav Varsh’.

The book on tribal leaders’ contributions to the freedom struggle, originally released by the ABVKA, has become a key reference for government ministries to promote stories of Adivasi rebellions. However, there have been controversies surrounding the content of the book, particularly regarding the accuracy and representation of tribal histories and leaders.

The BJP’s narrative focuses on portraying Adivasis as integral to Indian civilization and culture, emphasizing their resistance against British and Islamic invaders. While the government’s efforts to recognize tribal contributions are being lauded, there are criticisms and opposition from independent parties and tribal communities regarding the appropriation of Adivasi identity and history.

The discussion also addresses the double standards observed in transnational killings, citing examples of drone strikes by the U.S. and Mossad operations, and reflects on the impact of these actions on diplomatic relations between countries.
